Weight (Look for a “U” Rating)
This is the most common specification. Lighter rackets are faster, while heavier rackets provide more power.
-
3U: 85-89 grams (Commonly used by singles players for power)
-
4U: 80-84 grams (Very popular, great for doubles for quick speed and defense)
-
5U: 75-79 grams (Very light, extremely fast for defense and drives)
2. Balance Point (Playing Style)
This tells you where the weight is distributed. You can find this by balancing the racket on your finger.
-
Head-Heavy: The weight is shifted toward the racket head.
-
Pros: Adds significant power to your smashes and clears.
-
Best for: Attacking players who play from the back of the court.
-
-
Head-Light: The weight is shifted toward the handle.
-
Pros: Makes the racket much faster to move and easier to maneuver.
-
Best for: Defensive players and doubles players who need quick reactions at the net.
-
-
Even-Balance: The weight is distributed evenly.
-
Pros: A perfect blend of power and speed.
-
Best for: Beginners and all-around players who do a bit of everything.
-
3. Shaft Flexibility
This refers to how much the shaft (the long, thin part) bends.
-
Flexible: Bends easily. Helps players with slower swing speeds (like beginners) generate more power.
-
Medium: A balance between power and control, suitable for intermediate players.
-
Stiff / Extra Stiff: Bends very little. Used by advanced players with very fast swing speeds to get maximum control and precision.
4. Material
-
Aluminum or Steel: Found in very basic, beginner rackets. They are cheap and durable but heavy and offer poor performance.
-
Graphite / Carbon Fiber: The standard for all modern rackets, from intermediate to professional. They are very lightweight, strong, and provide the best feel and power.
5. String Tension (Measured in lbs)
-
Lower Tension (e.g., 18-23 lbs): Creates a “trampoline effect” for more power. The “sweet spot” (best area to hit) is larger, making it more forgiving for beginners.
-
Higher Tension (e.g., 24-30+ lbs): Provides much more control and a “crisp” feeling, but has a smaller sweet spot. This is preferred by advanced players who can already generate their own power.
